1   Link   Finnish Finish - National Approach to Box Squatting
Today many lifters talk about box squatting. Opinions vary alot. Some still state that using a box is a trick which has no effect to contest maxes at all. Some say that it will only work at APF meets where you don´t have to go so low. After hearing and reading different opinions I decited to give you mine. It is based from what I have seen and heared from lifters in Finland during the last five years.

2   Link   Rules for Maintaining a Successful Powerlifting Club
Over the years, I’ve seen many powerlifting/strength training clubs come and go. In my home state of North Carolina, I have personally witnessed at least five come and go in the last four years, and I have watched the camaraderie among the lifters disintegrate. It’s a sad fact that we have so many ....

3   Link   Advanced Smo Deadlift Training
Deadlifting is one of those lifts that becomes more than a little frustrating, especially when you hit lulls and plateaus in your training. The key is to continually find ways to train the principle without actually pulling them all from the floor. This part may be easier for the assisted lifter because of the spring effect of a well-fitting pair of briefs and/or “super suit.”

Like you, I love slapping more heavy plates onto a barbell as I progressively get stronger. When it comes to adding size and strength to my frame, I throw all caution to the wind and pour every ounce of piss and vinegar into each set I perform.

5   Link   Strongman Training for Powerlifting Gains
The idea for this article began during and after preparation for my first Strongman meet. I had been powerlifting for just over two years and had never really given much thought to Strongman. While surfing the web, I came across a Strongman meet that was close to where I live

Beginning in October, we began “training camp” with three days per week of speed and agility sessions followed by lifting (two groups) and individual basketball workouts. The speed and agility workouts lasted approximately 60 minutes and were comprised of a long dynamic warm-up (Parisi style, some exercises done barefoot)

7   Link   Cutting Weight
I'm assuming your weigh-in is on Friday morning at 9 am or so. On Thursday after lunch, stop all eating and drinking. If you are really hurting you can have a piece of toast with peanut butter on it in the evening but absolutely no liquids. Basically, I sweat all of the water weight out. How you do that really doesn't matter, but the important thing to remember is to expend as little energy as possible. Don’t do any running or calisthenics like a high school wrestler would do. You can use a steam sauna, dry sauna, hot baths, and even a car heater all bundled up in sweat clothes if nothing else is available.

8   Link   Grip Training for your Deadlift
Have trouble opening jars? Your hands look someone who got smashed by a house in the Wizard of Oz? You’ve got problems. Well, fortunately you are doing something about it. You are accessing a wealth of knowledge, on the greatest Powerlifting site on the web – www.EliteFTS.com. To increase your bench, dead and squat, one essential aspect everyone forgets – is strengthening your grip. Gripping the bar with the strongest / tightest grip possible is essential for locking your body into a solid, weight bearing structure. There are many different types of grip strength; supporting, pinch, crush, levering, bending and tearing – for instance. For this article we will focus on supporting strength as it pertains to your deadlift.

As a bench press specialist I train somewhat different
from the other members of the Westside Barbell Club. The following is a

10   Link   Powerlifters Have Values?
There aren’t many among us out there who make a living from their three lift totals. Most of us who engage in the sport need some other source of income in order to put gas in the tank and keep our significant other happy.

11   Link   Building the Deadlift: The Corrective Approach
Everyone tends to focus on the exact same thing when they attempt to improve their deadlift. Some rotate assistance exercises, others attempt to build more hypertrophy, and others pull with different grips and stances. I’m in the fourth group—the group that believes in building the deadlift through corrective methods. While it isn’t as “ball to the walls” as glute ham raises or reverse band pulls, these five quick fixes will build your deadlift and make you more efficient in no time.

12   Link   The Effects of Strongman on a Powerlifter
After an article written by C.J. Murphy was published on elitefts.com about how Strongman training has a greater carryover to powerlifting than powerlifting does to Strongman, I was confident that “Murph” presented some valid points. However, I was still far too skeptical to fully believe it. So without anyone who I trained with knowing, I conducted the experiment myself to answer the questions that were giving me the headaches. The following, which lists my assumptions as to what will happen at the end of the eight week cycle, was written approximately one week before I was scheduled to start.

What’s the fastest way to a big bench? I get asked that all the time. “What’s your rush?” I respond. Building a big bench (or any substantial amount of strength in any lift) requires time. But nobody wants to hear that and nobody wants to wait.

14   Link   Safety In The Gym and on the Platform
I think it is about time we had an article that explores the different aspects of safety. As many of you know, we had a nasty accident at the Eastern Grading competition last month, and I thought with so many newcomers to the sport, it would give them a good platform to start from as well as remind some more experienced lifters and helpers that safety is the most important thing.

15   Link   My Trip to Westside Barbell
I arrived at Westside to meet Dave Tate and one other trainee for a bench workout. Watching the instructional tapes, reading articles and seeing others perform the Westside techniques gave me a solid concept of what I wanted to execute. In reality things did not fall into place as well as I had hoped when training on my own. Dave watched as I knocked out my first triple using my dynamic load plus a couple of chains. The chains immediately made their presence felt by loading the top of the press, which is usually the easiest part of the rep. According to Dave keeping the bar over the wrists...

16   Link   Defending Olympic Lifting Movements for Athletes, Strongmen, and Powerlifters
ood strength coaches and lifters know that there are no absolutes in training. Exercise selection depends on the situation. However, given the right situation, Olympic lifting can be a badass way to train force development. That being said, my point here isn’t to provide biased information about how Olympic lifts are the only way to train athletes, powerlifters, or Strongman competitors but rather that these lifts also have a place in strength training.

Last spring, I set out on a quest to do something that I had been putting off for years—improving my horrid deadlift. Fifteen months later, my pull is up over 200 lbs and continues to improve in every cycle.

Great, another article about some dweebs first meet? Well, I’ve reviewed the other articles posted in the last year to make sure that I didn’t reiterate every point made. I think I’ve come up with a good list of what I learned and how new lifters can benefit from my experience.

It’s here! You’ve set up clearly defined goals. You’ve busted your ass for the past eight, twelve, or sixteen weeks. And now, quite simply, it’s show time. Unfortunately, while this should be the best part of the entire process, it can very quickly become the worst. There’s no feeling worse than not performing as expected on meet day.

I’ll start out by saying that I’m not a bench specialist, or even a guru, for that matter. I’m putting together the ideas that we use at Southside Gym that have given our group two, 800-lb benchers (Vincent Dizenzo, 800 lbs at 308 lbs and Rob “T.T” McCray, 830 at SHW).
