Who's tried breaking up regular chalkboard chalk to use for weightlifting? Does it work as well as the weightlifting stuff?

I live in Jacksonville NC and there doesn't seem to be anywhere around here that sells gymnast/climber/weightlifting chalk. I'm about to pull into staples and buy me a big pack of crayolas. tongue.gif

school chalk and pool chalk are not the same as gym chalk, it wont work. it will make the bar slip. school chalk= CACO3 Calcium Carbonate. gym chalk is made with magnesium, MGCO3. two different compounds with two different uses

i don't notice any difference but i use sidewalk chalk. get a cheese grater and grate the chalk sticks up with that. makes them into powder in a few seconds.

calcium carbonate will work just fine as a lifting chalk. Problem arises when the stick chalk you are going to buy isn't entirely "chalk" It has various additives, some of which can be wax or wax-like substances to increase wear. That will make the bar more slippery than traditionally used magnesium carbonate that is used for lifting or climbing, etc.

It worked ok...only problem was it was really hard and was hard to get it on thick. Was deff better than nothin!

Would be kinda funny to see guys walking around with pink and blue hands from the sidewalk chalk.

Hell, i've seen a very noticeable difference between different BRANDS ov lifting chalk... also tried climbing chalk (the handibag type), which was worse than the 'bad' brand ov lifting chalk. I could see classroom chalk being a lot worse. But it still might be better'n nothing...???

when i went to a commercial gym for 8 months i ran out of white chalk and i used green chalk. then i ran out of green chalk and used hot pink chalk. a few months later i ran out again and switched to orange and i finished my stay there with purple chalk.

no one ever said a word about my big clown mess.

There is a sports supplement shop over by Brynn Marr area that sells it by the case. That is where we buy ours if we run out before we put another order. If you need the exact name of the place let me know and Ill look it up for you.

I've had to use school chalk before. I thought it was pretty bad compared to weight lifting chalk. Better than nothing but you will notice a big difference.

It doesn't seem to work quite as well but I have used some when I have to train in gyms (fitness centers) that don't allow chalk. Classroom chalk is less messy, I think the trick is to not only get it on your hands, but first apply it directly to the bar as well.
