Opinions on this

Thu, 11/20/2008 - 23:28
I just saw a post at powerlifting watch and while most of it is B.S. this caught my attention....

"BIG owns 220 and lighter.
Westside owns 242 and heavier (Grandick is close @ 242 though)

I wonder if the training methods at each gym are geared towards the size of their average lifters. 220 and smaller lifters will have different leverages than 242 and bigger lifters."

Thoughts?

This isn't meant to turn into a BIG vs. WS thing. Just trying to see what experienced lifters thought vs. the rabble on powerlifting watch.

Radically modded katanas

Thu, 11/20/2008 - 14:41
A guy we know just got back from the IPF worlds. He was saying the japanese guys get a huge carryover out of a single ply Katana by these mad mods that they have done on them.

From what i understand, he was saying that the mod is as follows:

* They cut maybe 2 or 3" off the end of the sleeves

* They then unpick the sleeve seam, and sew it up tighter (less diameter), especially at the very end...i presume the cylinder of the sleeve has a sharp taper in at the cuff end

* Now when the shirt goes on, the tight cuff of the shirt stops it right at the elbow. If you imagine, this now leaves the chest plate around an inch or two OFF the chest

* When they bench, the super tight sleeve cuff stops the sleeve sliding up, therefore the chest plate never beds. I think this somehow increases the stretch in the chest plate when the bar touches and they get a huge pop.

Does anyone have any further knowlege of what the hells going on here? Is any of that correct? There was a vid on PL Watch a while ago of a japanese guy putting a shirt on himself in like 10 seconds and then benching huge, and there were several comments underneath that sounded similar to the above.

How do the Super Training Cut Katana and Super Katana differ from the above? Super Kats just a scooped reinforced neck right?

Whats your opinion

Classroom Chalk for Weightlifting?

Thu, 11/20/2008 - 02:16
Who's tried breaking up regular chalkboard chalk to use for weightlifting? Does it work as well as the weightlifting stuff?

I live in Jacksonville NC and there doesn't seem to be anywhere around here that sells gymnast/climber/weightlifting chalk. I'm about to pull into staples and buy me a big pack of crayolas.

trying to find a metal militia/westside article

Wed, 11/19/2008 - 03:15
Hi, i was researching metal militia's benching style one day and i thought i had come across an article or something that said that Louie Simmons now advocates pressing back and over the face as opposed to him formerly advocating pressing straight up and down. is there any truth to this?

UPA Bench Meet December 6 in Minneapolis?

Mon, 11/17/2008 - 21:08
I was looking for the entry form for the UPA Bench Press meet in Minneapolis. It comes up as on the Powerlifting watch UPA Website but I can't seem to find it on the UPA website. I know they have had to cancel in the past due to health problems but I was wondering what was up? Scott or Dammstrate?

Metal Bash Shirt

Sun, 11/16/2008 - 16:37
Well I just purchased a single ply, metal bash shirt last night, will be getting it sometime this week and hopefully a review for everyone. Has anyone ever used this particular shirt before????? I wanted to go single ply cause, I am a shotputter, and I didn't really want to go to crazy with an extreme shirt cause I only powerlift to be stronger for my sport and plan on competing in my first power meet in July.

This is going to be my first open back shirt so I was wondering if there is anything I should know before I give it a test drive?

Can anyone concur ?

best way to train DL is with the opposite stance?

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 22:08
I know a lot of sumo-style deadlifters include a lot of conventional stance DLing in their training, but does the opposite apply? do a lot of conventional pullers get any carryover doing sumo-style deadlifts? the weaknesses for each is the strength in the opposite no? the sumo deadlifter's weakness is gonna be breaking the bar off the floor, while the conventional deadlifter's weakness is usually around mid-shin?

Scott Nutter

Fri, 10/31/2008 - 12:33
Just want to let everyone know that Scott Nutter was in a bad car accident yesterday. He should be fine. He had surgery on his hand and had a bunch of cuts sewn shut, but long term he should be ok. He is a very lucky man. So if everyone could have Scott and his family in their thoughts and prayers that would be great.

Thanks.

Recovering from back injury!

Wed, 10/08/2008 - 12:33
Basically i hurt my back circa 6 weeks ago.

I follow sheiko princibles and for the past 4 weeks have completed every set i am supposed to at the prescribed %ages. Basically today i had some slight pain but virtually zero power! was supposed to go up to 195 5x3 but only managed 2 reps on the first set then went down to 167.5 and only managed 2x3 on this weight!!!! Rack deadlifts i couldnt even budge 125kg.

I had a competition in around 8 weeks and need to make sure im fully fit for that! Strength feels fine overall, squats and bench are going well just the damn deadlifts!!!!!!

Basically my form feels like its gone to shiat, im so slow off the floor now its crazy! used to be much much faster. My form feels all wrong but im not sure why its just suddenly changed :S

Any reccomendations, its not painful just weak! drop percentages? drop volume? drop them all together???#

Just after some oppinions!
